8 EV Makers Energized by SK On

SK On, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, has positioned itself as a leader in the electric vehicle (EV) battery market through a combination of technological advancements and strategic market moves. Last month the company inked a new agreement with Ferrari—one of the many EV makers working with SK On.

Specializing in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, SK On has developed cutting-edge battery technology, including high-nickel NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) and NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) batteries. As part of this effort, the company became the first global battery manufacturer to win an Edison Award, thanks to its NCM9 battery. The NCM9 battery is the world’s first commercialized NCM battery with a nickel content close to 90%. With a higher nickel content than the competition, the NCM9 battery has greater energy efficiency and power output.

In support of their leading technologies, SK On has established a large global manufacturing footprint. This includes strategic battery manufacturing locations in key markets such as the United States, Hungary, and China, enabling it to serve global automotive manufacturers efficiently and effectively. As of 2023, SK On commanded the fifth spot in the global EV battery market, with a market share of 5.4%. Notably, this 5.4% figure does mark a slight decrease from 2022, where the company commanded 5.7% of the global EV battery market.
