Ascend Elements Achieves Milestone in Construction of First US EV Battery pCAM Facility

Celebrating a construction milestone at Ascend Elements’ electric vehicle battery cathode precursor (pCAM) manufacturing facility in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of sustainable electric vehicle (EV) battery technology.

“I’d like to thank and congratulate our construction partners on a safe and successful 2023 and achieving 244,961 labor hours and no lost time or recordable safety incidents during the year,” stated Wenqing Su, VP of Global Capital Projects at Ascend Elements.

The company’s breakthrough is paramount in an age where the global automotive industry is shifting towards electrification to combat climate change. The facility’s focus on producing pCAM from recycled lithium-ion battery materials distinguishes it from the conventional reliance on primary (mined) metals, predominantly in China. This departure not only reduces dependence on overseas production but also addresses environmental concerns associated with mining and resource extraction.

Harnessing the patented synthesis process—Hydro-to-Cathode—Ascend Elements claims to optimize cathode manufacturing, simultaneously lowering costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Peer-reviewed studies, as cited by Ascend Elements, corroborate that their recycled battery materials demonstrate comparable performance to those sourced from virgin materials, underscoring the effectiveness and sustainability of their methodology.

This construction project has garnered support from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and grants from the U.S. Department of Energy. This endorsement acknowledges the project’s strategic significance in cultivating a robust and domestically-driven supply chain for crucial EV components.

The completion of the Apex 1 campus is poised to be a game-changer for the EV industry. With a capacity to produce pCAM and other engineered battery materials for 750,000 EVs annually, Ascend Elements is paving the way for a future where sustainable, domestically produced battery materials play a central role in accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation.
