Luxinar: Laser-Focused on Process Improvements at The Battery Show Europe

Luxinar, a laser technology developer since 1998, is focusing on process improvements possible with its laser sources at The Battery Show Europe 2024. The company is spotlighting its CO2 laser sources and femtosecond lasers for the first time at the event (held June 18–20 in Stuttgart, Germany).

The non-contact high-speed laser process reduces dust, chemicals, and production delays caused by traditional tools, resulting in unmatched productivity.

Laser surface structuring of electrodes for improved battery performance

Here, we highlight one of the many applications where lasers can improve battery production: Laser surface structuring of electrodes. Battery technology today is all about increasing power density, and laser processes are being developed to advance this. At high power densities, that is fast charging or discharging processes, lithium separation is currently an issue.

Femtosecond Laser Surface Structuring (FLSS) uses ultrashort pulses of laser light to introduce micropores into the active layer of the battery electrodes, thus mitigating the problem.

There are several advantages to using a femtosecond laser for battery electrode microstructuring:

  • FLSS is a precise process that produces patterns with sub-micron resolution. This creates very high surface area electrodes, leading to significant improvements in battery performance.

  • FLSS is a non-contact process, minimising damage to the electrodes. This enables seamless integration of microstructuring into existing battery manufacturing processes.

  • FLSS is a relatively fast process that can manufacture batteries on a large scale.

Overall, FLSS is a promising technology for improving the performance of battery electrodes. The advantages of FLSS, such as its precision, non-contact nature, and speed, make it a good candidate for large-scale battery manufacturing. With continued research and development, FLSS is expected to play an important role in the future of battery technology.

Luxinar Solid State Laser Product Manager Antonio Raspa, stated: “In the complex processes underlying battery production, the laser emerges as an indispensable tool for numerous applications. Luxinar’s laser sources are crucial in slitting, notching, and surface functionalisation processes and can expand the boundaries of what is technically possible.”
